A Bradel binding is a French variation on the cased structure; the strength is in the laminated spine piece. The depth of the joint was 3-4 times the board thickness, to accommodate the thicknesses of the covering materials in the joint.
A piece of very distressed calf was chosen for the covering of the boards. This covering materials would fold underneath the flange (spine edge) as well as forming turn-ins.

The book was designed with a snakeskin spine; underneath the skin would need to be a primary covering material, so that headcaps could be formed at either end. The connection between the two spine layers - the base and the snakeskin - would be loose, and they would only be connected underneath the boards.
The decorative (secondary) spine covering was the same width as the primary leather, shorter at the head of the book (no turn-in), and longer at the tail of the book (the tail of the snakeskin). No paring was necessary due to the thinness of the skin.
