18th century sample binding
This sample textblock was constructed of handmade paper with, marbled endpapers, sewn on recessed cords (which research indicated were in wide use for the "flat spine" appearance during the eighteenth century), a two-color hand-sewn endband, and an edge decoration on all three sides with sprinkled indigo pigment. The spine was lined in paper and vellum, and dyed calfskin was hand-pared for a full calf tightback binding.
